I do not have a car. I get around Lincoln Square and the north side of Chicago on an e-bike with two batteries, each good for about 30 miles in decent weather. The bike tops out around 15 to 20 mph. That is plenty from spring to fall. Winter changes three things: it is dark by about 4:30 PM, cold cuts battery range noticeably, and the lakefront wind makes every ride longer than the map says.

This page is the short list of gear that matters for that, split honestly between what is already on my bike and what I am adding before this winter. I am not going to pretend I have logged a season with the shortlist items; the owned ones I use, the rest fit a gap I can name.

Lights are the whole game

The helmet I ride with has front and rear LEDs built into the shell, which I bought specifically so I could never leave the house without lights. The gap is the bike itself: a helmet light sits high and moves with my head, so I am adding a rechargeable front and tail set that stays pointed down the lane. The Garmin radar tail light is the upgrade over that. It flags cars coming up behind you on the head unit or phone, and on a dark street that is the kind of thing worth paying for.

Batteries and the cold

Two batteries is how I keep a 20-mile round trip from being a gamble in January. The second one rides on the frame in a bottle-cage bracket I bought after the stock mount did not fit the downtube. Cheap part, solved a real problem. The rule I follow: charge both indoors, never leave a battery in a cold garage overnight, and treat a winter battery as good for roughly two thirds of its summer range.

Carrying a laptop

A backpack on a wet ride means a wet back and a nervous laptop. The waterproof pannier is on the list for that reason: it hangs off the rear rack and takes the laptop, a change of clothes, and lunch. If you only ever carry a small load, the cheaper rack bag on the category page does the job.

Locking up

In winter there are fewer people around the bike rack, so the lock matters more. A folding lock or a U-lock with a cable through the front wheel is the minimum for a bike left outside all day. Both are on the e-bike commuting page with notes on when each one fits.

Mounts to a rear rack, converts to a shoulder bag at the office, and the rain cover keeps a downpour on the commute in from being a reason to worry about what is inside.

Cheap part that got my downtube battery mounted. Fit is frame-specific, so check yours.

Not exciting, but it is the kind of part that saves a trip back to the bike shop over a mismatched mount.
